Everyone wants a fresh clean bathroom but not everyone has the time or inclination to slave away day in and day out to keep their bathroom in consistent tip-top shape. A few bathroom cleaning hacks will help with this. Your bathroom is the most used room in your house, and the more people you have in your household, the quicker it becomes a disaster zone. It can be time consuming trying to keep up with everyone’s mess. Because of this, I have put together a great list of 10 bathroom cleaning hacks that will help you get your bathroom super clean and smelling fresh!
Shine Your Bathroom Fixtures Naturally
A bit of lemon and salt will make your chrome fixtures shine and combat rust spots. Cut a lemon in half and dip it into salt. Use the salted lemon directly on your fixtures to scrub away water spots and grime.
Alternatively, you can make a paste using salt and lemon juice. Apply the paste with a lightly dampened sponge or non-scratch scour pad. Rinse.
TIP: Never use chlorine bleach on your metal fixtures because it can set in the stains.
Save Shower Curtains & Tub Mats From Mold
Throw your plastic shower curtain liners, any tub mats, and a few towels into the washing machine on the gentle cycle using warm water. Add a 1/2 cup of white vinegar to freshen everything up. The vinegar and towels will help loosen and remove any gunk from the shower curtain and tub mats. You can tumble dry the curtain liners on low for a few minutes to get any excess water off before you hang them back up to finish drying.
Unclog Your Shower Head Using Vinegar
Your shower head will naturally accumulate build up from mineral deposits over time. This build up can cause low water pressure and possibly water spraying in odd directions.
To remove mineral deposits and build up from your shower head, secure a bag filled with 2-3 cups of white vinegar to the shower head nozzle using a rubber band or twist tie. Make sure the entire shower head is submerged. Leave solution to soak the shower head for a few hours. Carefully remove the bag and run the shower to remove all leftover traces of vinegar.
Natural Citrus Scrub For Bathtub
Scrub away your tub grime naturally using only a grapefruit and salt. Cut a grapefruit in half and dip it in salt. Kosher salt works best but table salt will work in a pinch. Use the salted grapefruit to scrub the inside of your tub using circular motions.
The salt helps lift the grime while the acidic citrus breaks down soap scum. As an added bonus, this method leaves your tub smelling super fresh and clean.
TIP: If you don’t have a grapefruit on hand, you can use an orange or lemon and get the same great results!
Get Rid Of The Urinal Smell
If you have little boys in your house, you probably deal with the all too common problem of trying to maintain a fresh smelling bathroom. No matter what you do, it always seems to smell like a men’s urinal. There is an all-natural and easy solution and you can make it at home.
Make a thick paste using baking soda and lemon juice. You probably want to wear gloves for this next part. Apply the paste to anywhere on or around the toilet where you smell the strong odor of urine. You should also apply this paste anywhere you suspect there might be urine back splash just to be sure you get the smell completely out. Scrub any tiny hard to reach spaces with an old toothbrush. Apply more of the baking soda and lemon paste to these areas again if the scrubbing has worn it away. Pour 1 cup of white vinegar into your toilet bowl. Allow everything to sit for 30 minutes.
Once your 30 minutes are up, dampen a sponge or washcloth with vinegar and completely wipe away the paste. Flush the toilet. Viola! You FINALLY have a fresh smelling bathroom!
Clean And Brighten Your Grout
A super fast and easy way to clean and brighten up your tile grout is to just trace the grout using a bleach pen. Let it sit 5-20 minutes depending on the state of your grout. Wipe clean with a damp cloth or sponge. You can find bleach pens in the laundry section of your local supermarket.
Get Rid Of Soap Scum On Your Shower Doors
A quick and easy way to get the hard water stains and soap scum off your glass shower doors. Make a solution in a bowl of approximately 1 tablespoon of Dawn liquid dish soap concentrate, 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, and about 1 cup of hot water. Grab a Scotch Brite scratch-free scour pad and dip it into the bowl solution. Apply to your shower doors using a circular motion. Rinse with hot water. Squeegee your door for a crystal clean finish.
Keep Your Toilet Brush Fresh
Of all the bathroom cleaning hacks on this list, this one is so simple, you will wonder why in the world you never thought of it yourself!
Take any all-purpose cleaning liquid (I like Fabuloso) and pour a little in the bottom of your toilet brush basin. This will keep your toilet brush fresh and discourage build up of yucky bacteria.
This is also great for quick toilet touch-ups in between actual toilet bowl cleanings because the brush is already sitting in cleaning solution. A quick couple trips around the inside rim to freshen things up should do the trick. When you want to replace the solution in the brush basin, just dump the old stuff into the toilet bowl and scrub the toilet with it. Double duty bathroom hack!
Put The Toilet on Auto Clean
If you have a heavy traffic bathroom with lots of people using it regularly, you can put an in-tank toilet bowl refresher in the back of your toilet tank to help keep your bowl fresher between cleanings.
The in-tank versions are better suited for toilets that are frequently flushed because if the cleaner sits in the tank and builds up, it can affect the tank parts, causing corrosion.
If you have a less frequently used bathroom, opt for an in-bowl version that hangs on the side under the toilet seat. This way the cleaning solution is only being used when the water hits it from a flush and isn’t coming in contact with any sensitive tank parts.
Bathroom Cleaning Hacks For Your Mirror
Get a sparkling streak free mirror using these two quick tips.
First, use rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad to spot clean any sticky spots like hair spray or toothpaste spatter.
Using a store bought glass cleaner, or a homemade solution of 1 cup water & 1 cup white vinegar in a spray bottle, spray your mirror. Use a flat weave window cloth or a piece of newspaper to wipe your mirror. These options won’t cling to debris, they dry quicker, and they both help to reduce streaking. Wipe your mirror starting at the top, moving side to side working your way downwards.
